What You Should Know About Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, it is observed by Muslim worldwide and a month of prayers, reflection and community. It is important you know that the observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam which lasts 29 or 30 days from the sighting of the crescent moon to the next sighting. As long as you are an adult Muslim, it is obligatory that you observe fasting during the month of Ramadan, you can only be exempted if you are acutely or chronically ill, travelling, elderly, breastfeeding, diabetic or menstruating. The predawn meal that launches the fast is known as Sahur while the nightly feast that breaks the fast is called Iftar. It is believed that the spiritual rewards of fasting are multiplied during Ramadan.
