Palm Sunday: Introducing the Holy Week

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the Holy Week, which is a significant time for Christians all over the world. It is a time that allows us to reflect on the immense love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ for humanity, by focusing on His journey to the Cross. Palm Sunday is a great reminder of the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, where He was welcomed by the crowds who waved palm branches and even spread their cloaks on the road. As we ponder on this event, it is essential to see the connection between Palm Sunday, the Holy Week, and Lent. Lent is a forty-day period that precedes Easter Sunday, and it is observed by Christians worldwide. It is a time for self-reflection, repentance, and spiritual discipline as we prepare ourselves to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. During this season, we reflect on our lives as believers, seeking to align our lives with the teachings of Jesus. We undertake various disciplines such as fasting, prayer, and acts of kindness, w...

Religion and Legalism: Towards a balanced Spirituality

Religion and legalism have had a complex relationship throughout history. Legalism is the belief that strict adherence to rules and regulations is the only way to achieve salvation, while religion is a broader term that encompasses a wide range of beliefs and practices related to the worship of a higher power or powers. In this essay, I will explore the relationship between religion and legalism and argue that legalism often undermines the true purpose of religion. Legalism can be found in many religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. In Christianity, legalism often takes the form of a focus on rules and regulations rather than on the love and grace of God. This can lead to a narrow and legalistic view of salvation, where adherence to rules becomes more important than faith in God. Legalism can also lead to a judgmental and self-righteous attitude, where those who do not conform to the rules are seen as lesser or unworthy. Religion, on the other hand, is meant to be a pat...

Lenten 2023: What You Should Know

David, the man after gods own heart was supposed to be at war but got carried away by the lust of the eyes and lust of the flesh which culminated in adultery with Bathsheba and murder of Uriah her husband. He was reproached by God through prophet Nathan, but instead of justifying his actions as King Saul would have done, he was penitent and this birthed the famous psalm 51. David from verses 1-4 acknowledged his sins as he asked God for mercy, knowing fully well that God's judgement is right and in verse 5 acknowledges the state of original sin: "for I've been guilt-ridden from birth, a sinner from my mother's womb". Reading through the psalm, one won't but acknowledge the state of brokenness of David as he accepted his sins, felt sorry for them as he asked God to purify him and give him a new spirit. This is perfect contrition: (1) accept your sins and stop making excuses (2) accuse yourself of your sins (3) seek God's mercy and lastly, (4) se...
