 2021: COUNTING THE GAINS AND PAINS


"The new year always presents to us an opportunity to start again"


"Happy new year"; this is a normal ritual that we say to each other at the tail end and beginning of every year. But then, how happy has the year been?

The year 2020 brought the world to a standstill, jobs were lost, investments went down the drain, the economy of the world shakes, definitely, some benefitted immensely, while many looked forward to the year 2021 to start all over again.

So many plans were made, many rivers were crossed, we failed in some, we were successful in others, we gained in some investments, we recorded loss in some others, even in the face of the battered economy of our country.

The new year always presents to us an opportunity to start again, whereby, it is assumed that we have learnt from the mistakes of the past, except from the sons and daughters of perdition. We are to build on our successes and work on our failures.

It is pertinent to note that while we plan, we should plan for failures, we should plan for goals that would not be met, targets that would not be achieved, so that when we fall, we would not remain fallen, we would be presented an opportunity for a plan B.

Keep striving, set goals, set targets, definitely we will keep saying; "HAPPY NEW YEAR"

  War Dogs By Anuma Maxwell "Only the dead have seen the end of war" In the movie "Black Hawk Down," there is an opening quote by George Santayana which reads: "Only the dead have seen the end of war". Where war begins, there can't be war without bloodshed; when World War One started, you thought that was all. We read about World War Two and saw how war affects society and how war affects the economy. This then begs the question: can war be justified? Can war be ethical? If you trace your war history, where warlords and war dogs perpetuated war crimes, you would conclude that war can never be justified. The genocide by Hitler that wiped out more than six million Jews is a perfect example. The war-like situation in Ukraine, where hundreds of thousands have been forced to flee their homes and seek shelter in neighboring countries, War is not freedom because it's the innocent that bear the consequences.
