SINGLE AND NOT SEARCHING

SINGLE AND NOT SEARCHING

By Anuma Maxwell

"... marriage these days are fast becoming a case of family and societal pressure..."

Life is rhetorically just a circle that evolves and keeps repeating itself. You are given birth to, you are sent to school, you graduate from school, you get a job or own a business, you get married and settle down to raise your own family, and the cycle continues to go on.

It then becomes a taboo and abhorrent when there is a paradigm shift. At a particular age, the wedding call would continually be jingled into one's ear by the different status one belongs to: family, friends, colleagues; and truth be told, gone are those days when it was only women that face the pressure of getting married, men do face it also in our contemporary era, and it's always the same question: "when are you getting married? you are already getting old."

Our contemporary world have presented to us a paradigm shift in various principles and values that have been upheld over the ages. With the advent of feminist philosophy and patriarchal thoughts, there is a shift from " I want to get married" to " I'm not really sure about marriage"; and extreme thoughts of these two schools of thought has led to hatred between these two genders. Hence, it is becoming common nowadays to see bachelors and spinsters living alone because they have decided not to get married.

But come to think of it, is marriage an achievement? Does being single means failure? Is it a must to get married? These are questions that I throw down to us this day. I believe it's actually an erroneous view to believe that those that have decided to stay single are doing that so as to be free enough to be licentious. I have seen quite a number of single men and women doing very well for themselves and leading a highly moral life; definitely, they cannot all be good, but then, we can't use a part to give conclusion and justify the whole.
